چکیده

Sex differences in human brain lateralization are documented by studies on normal subjects, patients with the unilateral brain damage, and individuals with atypical level of hormones. However, there is no agreement as to the specific role of gender in the development of hemispheric asymmetry. This experiment was designed to examine whether gender identity plays an important role in the formation of brain lateralization, as some recent data seem to suggest. A group of subjects showing gender dysphoria (transsexuals) and two groups of control male and female subjects were presented with verbal and visual-spatial tasks. Results show that neither biological sex nor gender identity are sufficient factors to determine the pattern of hemispheric asymmetry.

Asymmetry of fetal cerebral hemispheres: in utero ultrasound study.

BACKGROUND Slight morphological asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres has been observed in fetal and newborn brains. In adults, sex differences in hemispheric asymmetry have also been reported. OBJECTIVE To establish whether cerebral hemisphere asymmetry correlates with sex in fetuses. METHODS Left-right cerebral hemisphere asymmetry, and the correlation with sex, were studied in 51 male an...

Conjugating time and frequency: hemispheric specialization, acoustic uncertainty, and the mustached bat

A prominent hypothesis of hemispheric specialization for human speech and music states that the left and right auditory cortices (ACs) are respectively specialized for precise calculation of two canonically-conjugate variables: time and frequency. This spectral-temporal asymmetry does not account for sex, brain-volume, or handedness, and is in opposition to closed-system hypotheses that restric...

Behavioral and physiological findings of gender differences in global-local visual processing.

Hemispheric asymmetries in global-local visual processing are well-established, as are gender differences in cognition. Although hemispheric asymmetry presumably underlies gender differences in cognition, the literature on gender differences in global-local processing is sparse. We employed event related brain potential (ERP) recordings during performance of a global-local reaction time task to...

Sex-Differences of Face Coding: Evidence from Larger Right Hemispheric M170 in Men and Dipole Source Modelling

The processing of faces relies on a specialized neural system comprising bilateral cortical structures with a dominance of the right hemisphere. However, due to inconsistencies of earlier findings as well as more recent results such functional lateralization has become a topic of discussion. In particular, studies employing behavioural tasks and electrophysiological methods indicate a dominance...

A Review of the Status of Brain Structure Research in Transsexualism

The present review focuses on the brain structure of male-to-female (MtF) and female-to-male (FtM) homosexual transsexuals before and after cross-sex hormone treatment as shown by in vivo neuroimaging techniques. Cortical thickness and diffusion tensor imaging studies suggest that the brain of MtFs presents complex mixtures of masculine, feminine, and demasculinized regions, while FtMs show fem...
